The purpose of business is to create value, and Jim Fisher ’78 has been extraordinarily successful in creating value using private equity. After working at firms such as KPMG, PwC, and Munich Reinsurance America, Fisher formed Fisher Capital Corporation, which became an affiliate of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., the pioneer of private equity firms.
Jim Fisher shared with the audience how he was lucky to play a huge role in the major transactions that highly contributed to the success of his companies. While all transactions come with risk, it is important to know what to look for in private equity. The most important quality that he looks for in a company is their strong management team. His personal experience, specifically with Bristol West, showcased his strong investment strategies and his niche in the industry.
Fisher emphasized how he never had a clear-cut path in his career; rather he took opportunities and risks that ultimately benefited him. “Hope is not a strategy,” said Fisher, you have to work hard to make things happen.
“Besides Mr. Fisher’s extraordinary personal accounts of his experience in the private equity industry, he offered the students useful advice on what it takes to be successful. Some tips included networking, taking initiative, competing against yourself, and learning how to budget. It was beneficial to see a successful journey from the account of someone who was once in our shoes at Lafayette. It showed how the tips he shared with us, aided him in getting to where he is today.” -Policy Studies student Amanda Case
